How to tie a tie - Half Windsor

 

Tying your own tie is a skill every man should have.  There are many ways to tie, each of which will all give you a slightly different look.  The half-Windsor is a good all-rounder for work and play.  

These instructions for tying a half-Windsor knot assume that you are right-handed. The images below are mirror images, so that you can see what you should see in front of the mirror.

  • Step 1:  First, the wide end of your tie should be on your right side, with the narrow end on your left side.

  • Step 2:  Cross the wide end over the other end. Now three regions are formed (Left, Right and Center).

  • Step 3:  Bring the wide end underneath the narrow end from Left to Right.

  • Step 4:  Bring the wide end over to the Center region.

  • Step 5:  Bring the wide end under the knot to the Left region.

  • Step 6:  Bring the wide end out of the shirt from Left to Right.

  • Step 7:  Bring the wide end under the knot to the Center region.

  • Step 8:  Bring the wide end down and pass the loop in front. Ensure that the knot is tightened.

  • Step 9:  Use one hand to pull the narrow end down gently and use the other hand to move the knot up until it reaches the center of the collar.
